א. Rosh Hashana for the Tree — Why "לאילן" in singular?

Tonight is Tu BiShvat. In the Mishna (Rosh Hashana), we find: "There are four Rosh Hashanas: in Nissan for kings, in Elul for animal tithes, in Tishrei for years, and the 15th of Shvat — Rosh Hashana for the Tree."

And do you know what else equals 91? אָמֵן (Amen)! That's why every time we say "Amen", we must have the kavana of this union הויה + אדנות.

ב. Is Man a Tree? — The Misunderstood Verse

We're used to saying: "כי האדם עץ השדה" — "For man is a tree of the field". But where does this verse come from?

"When you besiege a city... you shall not destroy its trees... for is the man the tree of the field, to come before you in the siege?" (Devarim 20:19)

It's like the story of Adam HaRishon's "apple" — it was NOT an apple! A non-Jewish painter drew the Garden of Eden with an apple, and since then, everyone believes it. The Gemara speaks of grapes, wheat, etrog... but never an apple!

ג. The Secret of Creation — The Earth's "Rebellion"

On the third day of Creation, Hashem commands:

"Let the earth bring forth grass, a fruit-tree making fruit" (Bereshit 1:11)

But what does the earth do?

"And the earth brought forth... a tree making fruit" (Bereshit 1:12)

The Earth "disobeyed"! But why?

ד. Mother Earth — The Ultimate Sacrifice

The Earth knew that on the sixth day, man would be created "עפר מן האדמה" — from the dust of the earth. She would be his mother!

The Earth thought: "My son will be made of two elements — dust that pulls him down (desires, instincts), and a divine soul that elevates him. He will surely sin! What defense will he have before Judgment?"

This is exactly what King David says: "כי בעוון חוללתי" — "For in sin I was conceived" (Tehilim 51:7). It's not an excuse, it's a legitimate defense!

ה. Tu BiShvat — Thank You Mom!

Thank you to Mother Earth (אמא אדמה) who sacrificed her honor, who accepted being "punished" (the earth was cursed because of Adam), so that her children would have a defense before the Heavenly Court.

Every Rosh Hashana, when we say "עפר אני בחיי, קל וחומר במותי" — "I am dust in my life, all the more so in my death" — we invoke this defense. And Hashem accepts, because He knows what material we are made of.

ו. The Connection to Parashat Beshalach — The Zohar Reveals

Tu BiShvat always falls around Parashat Beshalach. Coincidence? The Zohar says no!

"They walked three days in the desert and found no water. They came to Mara and could not drink the waters because they were bitter... Hashem showed him a TREE, he threw it into the waters and they became sweet." (Shemot 15:22-25)

What does Hashem say? "Throw the TREE into the water!" = Throw yourself into the Torah, even if you feel unworthy! Even if you think you're not pure enough, learned enough, religious enough — JUMP!

א. ראש השנה לאילן — למה "לאילן" ולא "לאילנות"?

הערב ט״ו בשבט. במשנה (ראש השנה) כתוב: ״ארבעה ראשי שנים הם: בניסן ראש השנה למלכים, באלול ראש השנה למעשר בהמה, בתשרי ראש השנה לשנים, ובט״ו בשבט — ראש השנה לאילן.״

ויודעים מה עוד שווה 91? אָמֵן! לכן כל פעם שאנחנו אומרים "אמן", צריך לכוון לחיבור הזה של הויה + אדנות.

ב. האם האדם עץ השדה? — הפסוק שלא הבנו

אנחנו רגילים להגיד: ״כי האדם עץ השדה״. אבל מאיפה הפסוק הזה?

״כי תצור אל עיר... לא תשחית את עצה... כי האדם עץ השדה לבא מפניך במצור?״ (דברים כ:יט)

זה כמו הסיפור של ה"תפוח" של אדם הראשון — זה לא היה תפוח! צייר גוי צייר את גן העדן עם תפוח, ומאז כולם מאמינים. הגמרא מדברת על ענבים, חיטה, אתרוג... אבל לא תפוח!

ג. סוד הבריאה — "המרד" של האדמה

ביום השלישי של הבריאה, הקב״ה מצווה:

״תַּדְשֵׁא הָאָרֶץ דֶּשֶׁא עֵץ פְּרִי עֹשֶׂה פְּרִי״ (בראשית א:יא)

אבל מה האדמה עושה?

״וַתּוֹצֵא הָאָרֶץ דֶּשֶׁא... וְעֵץ עֹשֶׂה פְּרִי״ (בראשית א:יב)

האדמה "מרדה"! אבל למה?

ד. אמא אדמה — ההקרבה העליונה

האדמה ידעה שביום השישי האדם ייברא ״עפר מן האדמה״. היא תהיה האמא שלו!

האדמה חשבה: ״הבן שלי יהיה עשוי משני חומרים — עפר שמושך אותו למטה (יצרים, תאוות), ונשמה אלוקית שמרוממת אותו. הוא בטוח יחטא! איזו טענת הגנה תהיה לו?״

זה בדיוק מה שדוד המלך אומר: ״כי בעוון חוללתי״ (תהילים נא:ז). זו לא תירוץ, זו טענת הגנה לגיטימית!

ה. ט״ו בשבט — תודה אמא!

תודה לאמא אדמה שהקריבה את כבודה, שהסכימה להיות "נענשת" (האדמה נתקללה בגלל אדם), כדי שלילדים שלה תהיה טענת הגנה בבית דין של מעלה.

כל ראש השנה, כשאנחנו אומרים ״עפר אני בחיי, קל וחומר במותי״ — אנחנו מזכירים את הטענה הזו. והקב״ה מקבל, כי הוא יודע מאיזה חומר אנחנו עשויים.

ו. הקשר לפרשת בשלח — הזוהר מגלה

ט״ו בשבט תמיד יוצא בסביבות פרשת בשלח. מקרה? הזוהר אומר שלא!

״וילכו שלשת ימים במדבר ולא מצאו מים. ויבאו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתות מים ממרה כי מרים הם... ויורהו ה׳ עץ וישלך אל המים וימתקו המים״ (שמות טו:כב-כה)

מה הקב״ה אומר? ״תזרוק את העץ למים!״ = תקפוץ לתורה, גם אם אתה מרגיש לא ראוי! גם אם אתה חושב שאתה לא מספיק טהור, לא מספיק למדן, לא מספיק דתי — תקפוץ!
